Launch of CSDW’s Borehole Project at Githima Secondary School: A Collaborative Effort for Sustainable Water Access

On Thursday, 23rd May 2024, Bethel Network proudly launched the CSDW’s Borehole Project at Githima Secondary School in Laikipia County, marking a significant step towards sustainable water access for the residents of Githima. This initiative, a collaborative effort with Laikipia County, the Laikipia County Government, Davis & Shirtliff, and other dedicated partners, addresses the pressing water challenges faced by the community due to the semi-arid climate and erratic rainfall patterns in Laikipia West sub-county.

Understanding the Water Crisis in Githima

Githima, located in Laikipia West sub-county, faces a harsh reality. The region’s semi-arid climate and inconsistent rainfall have created a persistent water scarcity problem. Without a single flowing river in the project area, residents have historically relied on alternative water sources such as water pans and dams. These sources, however, are often unreliable and insufficient, making the need for a sustainable water solution urgent.

Bethel Network’s Commitment to Sustainable Water Solutions

In response to these challenges, Bethel Network, in partnership with Laikipia County, the Laikipia County Government, Davis & Shirtliff, and other partners, is transitioning from merely purifying water to drilling boreholes that will provide a reliable and continuous supply of clean water. The borehole project at Githima Secondary School is the latest manifestation of our commitment to sustainable water solutions. By ensuring access to clean water, we aim to improve the quality of life for the residents and support the community’s long-term resilience against water scarcity.

Project Inception and Community Involvement

The borehole drilling at Githima Secondary School commenced on 2nd April, spearheaded by the CEC Water of Laikipia County. This project has been a collaborative effort involving local authorities and the community. The engagement and support from the residents and local leaders have been instrumental in the successful completion of the borehole.

Event Highlights: Official Commissioning and Community Impact

The official commissioning of the borehole took place on 23rd May 2024 and was a momentous event for the Githima community. Graced by H.E. Joshua Irungu, EGH, the Governor of Laikipia County, the ceremony highlighted the importance of this project in addressing the water needs of the region. Governor Irungu, a staunch advocate for clean drinking water access, emphasized the transformative impact this borehole will have on the community.

During the event, Bethel Network and its partners, including Laikipia County, the Laikipia County Government, and Davis & Shirtliff, also distributed water tanks to vulnerable families. This initiative ensures that families have adequate storage for the clean water they will now have access to, addressing immediate water needs and promoting better health and hygiene practices among the residents.

Partnerships and Future Plans

The successful implementation of the borehole project was made possible through our collaboration with Laikipia County, the Laikipia County Government, Davis & Shirtliff, and other dedicated partners. Their expertise and support have been invaluable in bringing this project to fruition.

Looking ahead, Bethel Network remains committed to expanding our water access initiatives across Laikipia County and beyond. By continuing to deploy sustainable solutions like borehole drilling, we aim to create a future where every community has reliable access to clean and safe drinking water.
