In a recent visit to Maragua, Bethel Network had the pleasure of reconnecting with local farmers to assess the progress of our ongoing food security initiative. This program, designed to empower farmers with sustainable agricultural practices, has seen significant success thanks to the hard work and dedication of the farmers involved.
During the meeting, Mary, our CEO, expressed her gratitude to the farmers, likening our return to the biblical parable of the talents—where we invested in their growth, and now we return to witness the fruits of their labor. Farmers shared incredible stories of transformation. Rebecca, one of our agroecological trainees, proudly spoke of her new skills, which have allowed her to plant a variety of crops, including bananas and tree tomatoes. Despite some challenges, such as water scarcity and limited access to resources like water tanks, the resilience and determination of these farmers shine brightly.
The key challenges highlighted included access to water, especially for irrigation. Farmers expressed the need for Bethel’s continued support in fixing the borehole and ensuring water is reticulated to households. Additionally, they voiced a desire for microfinance assistance and more training in water-efficient farming methods.
At Bethel, we are committed to supporting these farmers every step of the way. Plans are underway to fix the borehole, organize microfinance opportunities, and launch new training sessions focused on group dynamics and farming techniques that conserve water. With the active involvement of local leaders and our dedicated team, we aim to continue empowering these farmers towards sustainable food production and a brighter future.
