Empowering Teachers in Turkana County, Kakuma: Bethel Network Leads Menstrual Hygiene Training

In a collaborative effort to address menstrual health challenges and empower teachers in Turkana County, Bethel Network partnered with KDII to conduct a Training of Trainers (TOT) session. Held recently, the event brought together 62 educators eager to expand their knowledge and skills in menstrual hygiene management.

Led by Mercy Kimani, a seasoned Bethel trainer, and Ruth Kerubo, a dedicated Bethel Nurse, the training followed the comprehensive guidelines outlined in Bethel’s Lasting Impressions handbook on Menstrual Hygiene Management. With a focus on practical strategies and evidence-based approaches, the session aimed to equip teachers with the tools and resources necessary to support girls in managing their menstrual health with dignity and confidence.

One of the highlights of the event was the preview of KDII’s innovative reusable sanitary towel. As part of their commitment to sustainable menstrual hygiene solutions, KDII provided attendees with a firsthand look at their environmentally friendly product, offering insights into its usage, benefits, and impact.

In addition to the hands-on training, participants were also presented with Ministry of Health handbooks on hygiene and menstrual health management, providing valuable reference materials to complement their learning. These resources, endorsed by the government, further underscored the importance of menstrual hygiene as a critical component of overall health and well-being.

At the conclusion of the TOT session, participants were presented with certificates, recognizing their dedication to advancing menstrual hygiene education in their communities. The certificates served as a testament to their commitment to ensuring that every girl has access to the knowledge and support she needs to manage her menstrual health safely and hygienically.

The partnership between Bethel Network and KDII exemplifies the power of collaboration in addressing complex social challenges. By pooling their expertise and resources, they have created a platform for meaningful dialogue, knowledge exchange, and capacity building among teachers in Turkana County.

As these newly trained educators return to their schools and communities, they carry with them the tools, confidence, and passion to make a lasting impact on the lives of girls. With their newfound knowledge and skills, they are poised to serve as champions of menstrual hygiene, advocates for girls’ rights, and catalysts for positive change in Turkana County and beyond.

Bethel Network and KDII remain committed to supporting teachers and communities in their efforts to promote menstrual health and hygiene. Through ongoing collaboration, education, and advocacy, they strive to create a world where every girl can manage her menstrual health with dignity, confidence, and pride.
