Psychosocial counselling for affected schools in laikipia county

Our Business Growth

Laikipia is situated on the equator in the former Rift Valley region. It is the 31st county listed and is a cosmopolitan county. There are a number of causes for the seasonal violence in Laikipia. These include its geographic location as well as its shady political machinations. The main contributing causes, however, are the opposing viewpoints that pastoralists and farmers each hold.

In 2021, from October through November, we ran a pilot program in 20 schools. The majority of the students were evicted from their homes, some had personally witnessed the attacks, and others were tending to emotional and physical wounds. Not surprisingly, the teachers bore the heaviest strain.

Our focus was on the Laikipia West constituency, notably the areas around Ol Moran and its surroundings.   We extended our work to Luoniek, which is in Ol Moran’s north-east and is located about 30 kilometers from the town of Ol Moran. The program officers used the Group Therapy, Personal Development, Free Association Technique and Narrative Therapy approaches in 27 sessions for 1993 students.

Key Objectives:

  • To monitor the healing process of the affected community.
  • To emphasize the need to seek assistance whenever there is emotional, psychological or even physical distress.
  • Psycho-educate on the ways to manage stress and avoid stressors.

The program has managed:

  • To help 1993 students stabilize mentally through psychosocial program.
  • To highlight the situation of the food security where by the schools have food scarcity.
  • To highlight the need for teachers being equipped with skills to help the pupils as they recover gradually.
  • To highlight the challenge of wild animals and human conflict contributing to the food scarcity problem.
