Empowering Laikipia Women: Bethel Network Partners with County Government of Laikipia for Water Access Initiative

In a significant step towards ensuring access to clean water for all Laikipians, Bethel Network proudly partnered with the Laikipia County Government for a transformative initiative aimed at providing water harvesting and storage tanks to grassroots women groups across the region. The initiative, spearheaded by the County Governor, Hon. Joshua Irungu, EGH, reflects a commitment to address the pressing need for reliable water sources in communities.

Governor Irungu recently concluded the first phase of a series of Women Open Fora in Kinamba, where approximately 500 grassroots women group leaders convened for a day-long discussion on the provision and distribution of some 50,000 water harvesting and storage tanks. These women leaders, hailing from Ol-Moran, Sosian, Githiga, and Marmanet wards, gathered at the Kinamba Catholic Church hall to engage in dialogue and planning for the initiative.

The program, which aligns with Governor Irungu’s agenda of ensuring no Laikipian treks for more than one kilometer in search of clean water, aims to provide households with sufficient water throughout the dry season until the next rainy season. Each tank, with a capacity of 3000 liters, will be available to women group members at a subsidized cost, with the county government and development partners contributing to make up the total cost per tank.

Bethel Network, alongside other esteemed partners such as Tirus and Esther Foundation, Consolidated Bank, Africa Centre for Women Information and Communication (ACWIT), and K De Igratium International (KDII), played a pivotal role in supporting this initiative. Through their collaboration with the Laikipia County Government, these partners are facilitating the acquisition and distribution of water tanks to grassroots women groups, ensuring that communities have access to this essential resource.

Transparency and accountability are central to the implementation of this project, with consensus reached that respective ward County Development Assistants (CDAs) will serve as the link between the County Government and women groups. This structure aims to provide factual and reliable information to ensure the success of the initiative in each ward.

Bethel Network is honored to be a part of this transformative initiative, which has the potential to significantly improve water harvesting and storage capabilities in Laikipia. By empowering grassroots women groups with access to clean water, we are contributing to the health, well-being, and prosperity of communities across the region.

As the initiative progresses, we look forward to continuing our partnership with the Laikipia County Government and other stakeholders to create positive change and sustainable impact for the people of Laikipia.

Together, we can ensure a brighter future for all Laikipians.
